Massa jenisnya pada umumnya adalah 4500 Kg/m&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;3&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;. Endapan VMS kebanyakan merupakan akumulasi [[stratiform]] dari mineral-mineral [[sulfida]] yang [[Presipitasi (meteorologi)|terpresipitasi]] dari cairan hidrotermal diatas atau dibawah [[lantai samudra]] pada [[skala waktu geologi]] dari yang kuno hingga yang modern. Di samudra modern mereka sangat mirip dengan lidah-lidah sulfur yang biasa disebut [[asap hitam]] (&amp;#039;&amp;#039;black smoker).&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&lt;br /&gt;

Mereka terbentuk di lingkungan yang didominasi oleh proses [[vulkanisme]] atau di lingkungan asal vulkanik (contoh, sedimen vulkanik), dan pengendapan terjadi bersamaan dengan pembentukan batuan vulkanik tersebut. Tipe endapan ini merepresentasikan sumber yang signifikan dari tembaga, seng, [[timbal]], [[emas]], dan bijih [[perak]], dengan [[kobalt]], [[timah]], [[barium]], [[sulfur]], [[selenium]], [[mangan]], [[kadmium]], [[indium]], [[bismuth]], [[telurium]], [[galium]], dan [[germanium]] juga hadir sebagai produk sampingan maupun produk yang berasal dari proses berbeda di tempat yang sama.&lt;br /&gt;

Endapat sulfida masif vulkanogenik yang terbentuk saat ini berada di lantai samudra di sekitar [[gunungapi bawah laut]] bersama dengan [[punggung tengah samudra]], selain juga berada di [[cekungan busur belakang]] dan busur depan apungan (&amp;#039;&amp;#039;rift). &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Banyak perusahaan eksplorasi [[mineral]] saat ini sedang mengeksplorasi endapan sulfida masif lantai samudra; Meskipun begitu sebagian besar eksplorasi terkonsentrasi dalam mencari ekuivalen endapan yang ada di darat.&lt;br /&gt;

Kedekatannya dengan pusat erupsi dan [[batuan vulkanik]] membuat endapan VMS agak berbeda dengan tipe endapan sejenis yang memiliki sumber, cara transportasi, dan pemerangkapan yang sama. Endapan VMS dibedakan dengan endapan bijih lain karena terbentuk dekat dengan wilayah vulkanisme submarin dan terbentuk oleh sirkulasi hidrotermal dan ekshalasi sulfida yang tidak bergantung dengan proses-proses [[sedimentasi]], dimana endapan yang bergantung dengan proses-proses sedimentasi ini disebut endapan SEDEX (&amp;#039;&amp;#039;sedimentary exhalative &amp;#039;&amp;#039;atau sedimentasi ekshalasif).&lt;br /&gt;
