Buku tahun 1944 berjudul &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[What is Life? (Schrödinger)|What is Life?]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; karya fisikawan peraih [[Hadiah Nobel|Nobel]], [[Erwin Schrödinger]], mendorong penelitian lebih lanjut di bidang ini. Dalam bukunya, Schrödinger awalnya menyatakan bahwa kehidupan bergantung pada entropi negatif, atau kadang disebut [[negentropi]]. Namun dalam edisi berikutnya, ia memperbaiki pernyataannya menanggapi kritik dan menjelaskan bahwa sumber sejati kehidupan adalah [[Energi bebas termodinamika|energi bebas]].
