Mineral ini sebelumnya digunakan dalam proses pembuatan aluminium murni. Kesulitan dalam memisahkan aluminium dari oksigen di dalam bijih oksida (seperti [[aluminium oksida]]) dapat dipecahkan dengan mencampur senyawa tersebut dengan kriolit. Kriolit murni akan melebur pada suhu 1012&amp;amp;nbsp;°C (1285 [[Kelvin|K]]) dan pencampuran tersebut akan menurunkan titik lebur aluminium oksida, sehingga aluminium dapat diekstrak dengan lebih mudah dalam proses [[elektrolisis]]. Masih dibutuhkan energi dalam jumlah yang besar untuk memanaskan bahan yang diperlukan dan melakukan proses elektrolisis, tetapi penggunaan energinya lebih efisien daripada meleburkan aluminium oksida itu sendiri. Kriolit alami kini sudah terlalu langka untuk digunakan dalam proses tersebut, sehingga natrium aluminium fluorida sintetik kini digunakan; senyawa tersebut dihasilkan dari mineral [[fluorit]].&lt;br /&gt;
