Para peneliti perintis pernah mempelajari alat kelamin laki-laki dan perempuan saat berhubungan (penetrasi penis ke dalam vagina) menggunakan teknologi ultrasonik pada tahun 1992, lalu dengan pencitraan resonansi magnetik (MRI) pada tahun 1999. Dari penelitian ini, mereka memetakan bentuk anatomi saat hubungan terjadi, sekaligus menangkap gambar yang memperlihatkan bagaimana penis dan vagina saling menyesuaikan. Hasil MRI menunjukkan bahwa penis tampak berbentuk menyerupai bumerang, sepertiga panjangnya terdiri dari pangkal yang tertanam, dan dinding vagina melingkupinya dengan rapat.&lt;br /&gt;

Selain itu, MRI juga memperlihatkan bahwa bagian dalam [[klitoris]] ikut terangsang oleh gerakan penetrasi penis ke vagina. Penelitian ini menekankan peran penting klitoris, sekaligus memberi pemahaman bahwa apa yang disebut [[titik G]] mungkin sebenarnya ada karena klitoris yang kaya saraf tertarik mendekati dinding depan vagina saat perempuan terangsang dan ketika terjadi penetrasi.&lt;br /&gt;
