Mekanisme pendorong Alcubierre membutuhkan [[densitas energi]] negatif, sehingga membutuhkan [[materi eksotik]], dan bila materi eksotik dengan properti yang tepat tidak ada maka pendorong ini tidak dapat dibangun. Namun, Alcubierre berargumen bahwa [[efek Casmir|ruang hampa Casimir]] di antara piringan-piringan paralel dapat memenuhi kebutuhan energi negatif. Sementara itu, meskipun metrik Alcubierre sesuai dengan relativitas umum, relativitas umum tidak meliputi [[mekanika kuantum]].
