Istilah &amp;#039;&amp;#039;proteomik&amp;#039;&amp;#039; pertama kali dikenal pada tahun 1997, yang juga dibuat berdasarkan analogi [[genetika]] untuk ilmu yang mempelajari mengenai [[gen]]. Untuk istilah &amp;#039;&amp;#039;proteom&amp;#039;&amp;#039; sendiri berasal dari gabungan istilah protein dan [[genom]] yang dikemukakan oleh [[Marc Wilkins]] pada tahun [[1994]] pada saat mengambil gelar PhD. Salah satu alat yang umumnya digunakan untuk ilmu ini adalah &amp;#039;&amp;#039;matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (MALDI).&lt;br /&gt;

Beberapa jenis metode telah dikembangkan untuk mempelajari protein. Di mulai pada 1 abad lalu, proteomika menggunakan analisis 2D berupa gel elektroforesis poliakrilamida. Dengan menggunakan teknik ini, protein dalam suatu sampel dapat dipisahkan, diindentifikasi, dan diukur berdasarkan berat molekulnya. Dengan menggunakan analisis ini, berbagai jenis protein yang dihasilkan oleh beragam bakeri, seperti &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Escherichia coli]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, telah berhasil dipisahkan dan dipurifikasi. Teknologi lain yang dikembangkan adalah [[spektrometri massa]] yang bersifat sangat sensitif. Di samping itu, [[Kromatografi cair berperforma tinggi]] (HPLC) juga dapat digunakan di mana sampel yang digunakan diinjeksikan ke dalam kolom bertekanan tinggi dan protein yang terkandung di dalamnya akan berikatan dengan matriks yang ada.&lt;br /&gt;
