Richard Lydekker dilahirkan di Tavistock Square di [[London]]. Ayahnya adalah Gerard Wolfe Lydekker, seorang pengacara berketurunan Belanda. Keluraga mereka pindah ke Harpenden Lodge segera setelah kelahiran Richard.
