Rubidium (37Rb) memiliki 36 isotop, dengan rubidium yang terbentuk secara alami hanya terdiri dari dua isotop; 85Rb (72,2%) dan 87Rb yang radioaktif (27,8%). Campuran normal rubidium cukup radioaktif untuk mengaburkan film gulung dalam waktu sekitar 30 hingga 60 hari.

87Rb memiliki waktu paruh tahun. Ia dengan mudah menggantikan kalium dalam mineral, dan karena itu cukup tersebar luas. 87Rb telah digunakan secara luas dalam penanggalan batuan; 87Rb meluruh menjadi 87Sr yang stabil melalui emisi partikel beta (sebuah elektron yang dikeluarkan dari inti). Selama kristalisasi fraksional, Sr cenderung menjadi terkonsentrasi di plagioklase, meninggalkan Rb dalam fase cair. Oleh karena itu, rasio Rb/Sr dalam sisa magma dapat meningkat dari waktu ke waktu, menghasilkan batuan dengan peningkatan rasio Rb/Sr dengan peningkatan diferensiasi. Rasio tertinggi (10 atau lebih tinggi) terjadi pada pegmatit. Jika jumlah awal Sr diketahui atau dapat diekstrapolasi, maka umurnya dapat ditentukan dengan pengukuran konsentrasi Rb dan Sr dan rasio 87Sr/86Sr. Tanggal menunjukkan usia sebenarnya dari mineral hanya jika batuan belum diubah kemudian. Rubidium-87

Rubidium-87 adalah sebuah isotop rubidium. 87Rb adalah atom pertama dan paling populer untuk membuat kondensat Bose–Einstein dalam gas atom encer. Meskipun 85Rb lebih melimpah, 87Rb memiliki panjang hamburan positif, yang berarti saling menolak, pada suhu rendah. Hal ini mencegah runtuhnya semua kondensat kecuali yang terkecil. Ia juga mudah untuk mendinginkan secara evaporatif, dengan hamburan timbal balik yang kuat dan konsisten. Ada juga pasokan laser dioda murah yang tidak dilapisi yang biasanya digunakan pada penulis CD, yang dapat beroperasi pada panjang gelombang yang benar.

87Rb memiliki massa atom 86,9091835 u, dan energi pengikatan 757.853 keV. Kelimpahan persen atomnya adalah 27,835%, dan memiliki waktu paruh tahun.
