Iridium-192
Iridium-192 (192Ir) adalah sebuah isotop iridium yang radioaktif, memiliki waktu paruh 73,83 hari.[3] Ia meluruh dengan memancarkan partikel beta (β) dan radiasi gama (γ). Sekitar 96% dari peluruhan 192Ir terjadi melalui emisi β dan radiasi γ, menjadi 192Pt. Beberapa partikel β ditangkap oleh inti 192Ir lainnya, yang kemudian diubah menjadi 192Os. Penangkapan elektron bertanggung jawab atas sisa 4% dari peluruhan 192Ir.[4] 192Ir biasanya dihasilkan oleh aktivasi neutron dari logam iridium yang melimpah secara alami.[5]
192Ir merupakan pemancar sinar gama yang sangat kuat, dengan konstanta dosis gama sekitar 1,54 μSv·h−1·MBq−1 pada 30 cm dan aktivitas spesifik 341 TBq·g−1 (9,22 kCi·g−1).[6][7] Ada tujuh paket energi utama yang dihasilkan selama proses disintegrasi mulai dari lebih dari 0,2 sampai sekitar 0,6 MeV.
192Ir umumnya digunakan sebagai sumber sinar gama dalam radiografi industri untuk menemukan cacat pada komponen logam.[8] Ia juga digunakan dalam radioterapi sebagai sumber radiasi, khususnya dalam brakiterapi.
192Ir telah menyumbang sebagian besar kasus yang dilacak oleh Nuclear Regulatory Commission di mana bahan radioaktif hilang dalam jumlah yang cukup besar untuk membuat bom kotor.[9]
Isomer 192m2Ir merupakan salah satu isomer yang tidak biasa, karena waktu paruhnya yang panjang untuk sebuah isomer, dan waktu paruhnya jauh melebihi waktu paruh dari keadaan dasarnya.
