Prometium (61Pm) adalah sebuah unsur sintetis, kecuali dalam jumlah renik sebagai produk fisi spontan 238U dan 235U dan peluruhan alfa 151Eu, dan dengan demikian berat atom standarnya tidak dapat diberikan. Seperti semua unsur sintetis lainnya, ia tidak memiliki satu pun isotop stabil. Ia pertama kali disintesis pada tahun 1945.
Tiga puluh delapan radioisotop telah dikarakterisasi, dengan yang paling stabil adalah 145Pm dengan waktu paruh 17,7 tahun, 146Pm dengan waktu paruh 5,53 tahun, dan 147Pm dengan waktu paruh 2,6234 tahun. Semua isotop radioaktif yang tersisa memiliki waktu paruh kurang dari 365 hari, dan sebagian besar memiliki waktu paruh kurang dari 30 detik. Unsur ini juga memiliki 18 keadaan meta, dengan yang paling stabil adalah 148mPm (t1/2 41,29 hari), 152m2Pm (t1/2 13,8 menit) dan 152mPm (t1/2 7,52 menit).
Isotop prometium memiliki berat atom berkisar mulai dari 125,95752 u (126Pm) hingga 162,95368 u (163Pm). Mode peluruhan utama untuk 146Pm dan isotop yang lebih ringan adalah penangkapan elektron, dan mode utama untuk isotop yang lebih berat adalah peluruhan beta. Produk peluruhan utama sebelum 146Pm adalah isotop unsur 60 (neodimium) dan produk utama sesudahnya adalah isotop unsur 62 (samarium).

Stabilitas isotop prometium
Prometium adalah salah satu dari dua unsur dengan yang tidak memiliki isotop stabil; yang satunya adalah teknesium (Z = 43). Hal ini merupakan efek yang jarang terjadi dari model tetesan cair.
Prometium-147
Prometium-147 memiliki waktu paruh 2,62 tahun, dan merupakan produk fisi yang diproduksi di reaktor nuklir melalui peluruhan beta dari 147Nd. Isotop 142Nd, 143Nd, 144Nd, 145Nd, 146Nd, 148Nd, dan 150Nd merupakan isotop stabil atau hampir stabil, sehingga isotop prometium dengan massa tersebut tidak dapat diproduksi oleh peluruhan beta dan oleh karena itu bukan produk fisi dalam jumlah yang signifikan. 149Pm dan 151Pm memiliki waktu paruh hanya 53,08 dan 28,40 jam, sehingga tidak ditemukan pada bahan bakar nuklir bekas yang telah didinginkan selama berbulan-bulan atau bertahun-tahun.
147Pm digunakan sebagai sumber partikel beta dan bahan bakar generator termoelektrik radioisotop (radioisotope thermoelectric generator, RTG); kerapatan dayanya sekitar 2 watt per gram. Dicampur dengan fosfor, ia digunakan untuk menerangi ujung sakelar listrik Apollo Lunar Module dan dicat pada panel kontrol Lunar Roving Vehicle.[5]
